To the editor:
February 18 through 24 is Tri Kappa Week for 2024 in the state of Indiana.
Founded in 1901, Tri Kappa gives approximately $1.5 million dollars every year to local and statewide projects in the areas of charity, culture and education. All chapters support Riley Children’s Hospital, The Mental Health Association of Indiana, ARC of Indiana, Indiana Special Olympics, Best Buddies of Indiana, the Hoosier Art Salon and many more worthwhile projects.
The Portland Beta Theta Chapter, founded in 1915, supports many local organizations including Arts Place, 4th of July Committee, the historical society, Pregnancy Care Center, United Way of Jay County, Winterfest, Jay Community Center, the Jay County Public Library Summer Reading Program, Jay County Summer Swim Team, Jay County Law Enforcement Camp, Jay County Head Start, Reading is Fundamental, Jay County Special Olympics and the Youth Service Bureau, just to name a few.
Annually, we give $4,500 in scholarships to Jay County High School seniors and chamber gift certificates to each resident at Jay County Retirement Center and the county nursing and group homes, five facilities in all totaling 188 residents.
We would like to thank the public for supporting our annual fundraisers: Terri Lynn nuts/Abbot Caramels sales, the Vera Bradley/Thirty-One Bingo (this year’s is April 22 at Jay County Junior-Senior High School) and the slushie sales at the Jay County Fair. Thanks also to those who buy advertisements that we announce at the fair. We are the faces that you see when you buy tickets, have your tickets checked at the gate and are ushered to seats at grandstand events at the fair.
The girls of Tri Kappa have fun working together to do projects for the betterment of our community. We meet new people that we normally wouldn’t cross paths with, both locally and throughout the state.
Jay County is a great place to live and raise a family, in part because of the support of several philanthropic organizations in our community. Please consider getting involved in an organization that gives back to our community.
Sincerely,
Jodi McKee
