To the editor:
In a world where digital communication is constant, it is a cruel irony that so many in our communities feel profoundly alone.
The loneliness epidemic isn’t just a national or global issue, it’s here in Jay County, too. And it’s time we started treating it like the serious public health crisis it is.
Research shows that chronic loneliness can be harmful. It weakens our immune systems, raises the risk of heart disease and increases the likelihood of depression and anxiety. The World Health Organization and public health experts now recognize loneliness as a widespread threat to well-being.
Here in Jay County, we see this impact across generations. Our older residents, especially those living alone or with limited mobility, often face deep isolation.
But loneliness doesn’t stop with age. Many young adults in our area struggle with disconnection and a lack of meaningful relationships, even while surrounded by social media and online communication.
In smaller rural communities like ours, where resources may already be stretched, this kind of isolation can be easy to overlook — but no less damaging.
It takes community effort. We need to invest in events that connect neighbors and foster a sense of belonging.
But more than anything, it takes all of us. It means checking in on a neighbor, inviting someone to coffee or starting a conversation at the grocery store.
Real change begins with small actions that remind people they are seen and valued.
Loneliness is a silent crisis — but it doesn’t have to be a permanent one. Jay County has always been a place of resilience and community spirit. Let’s use that strength to build a culture of connection — where no one has to feel invisible.
Together, we can face this epidemic — and overcome it.
