Have mental health conversations

Letter to the editor

To the editor:

May is recognized nationwide as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to elevate the conversation around mental wellness, reduce stigma and remind our community that help and hope are always available.

Every one of us is impacted by mental health, whether personally or through the experiences of family, friends, coworkers or neighbors. In Jay County and beyond, we continue to see the growing need for accessible, compassionate mental health and recovery support. Mental illness does not discriminate. It affects people of every age, race, gender and background. Now more than ever, we must make it known: it’s OK to ask for help, and no one should face mental health challenges alone.

As Dr. Lisa Damour reminds us, “Mental health is not about being healthy all the time. Mental health is having feelings that are appropriate for the situation and being able to manage those feelings effectively.” Acknowledging our emotions and learning how to navigate them is a vital part of well-being, and it’s something we all can work on together.

Organizations like Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition and our many community partners, including Meridian Health Services, A Better Life – Brianna’s Hope and IU Health Jay Behavioral Health, work daily to connect individuals with peer support and recovery resources. We believe in treating mental health with the same urgency and empathy as physical health.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we encourage individuals to check in on themselves and each other. Attend a support group, talk to a peer, volunteer, share your story or simply listen without judgment. Together, we can build a stronger, more supportive community.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, help is available 24/7.

You can call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, to speak with a trained crisis counselor.

Locally, organizations like Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition, Meridian Health Services, A Better Life – Brianna’s Hope, and IU Health Jay Behavioral Health offer support and linkage to care.

You’re not alone. Support is just a phone call away.

Let’s continue the conversation beyond May. Mental health matters every day of the year.

Sincerely,

Ally Raines

Director of Recovery
