Sophomore Brenna Schmiesing and her fellow middle blockers disturbed the Winchester Golden Falcons’ offense enough to push the Jay County High School volleyball team to a 25-17, 20-25, 25-17, 25-10 triumph Tuesday.

Tucker Griffin was an eighth grader the last time he picked up a tennis racquet in a competitive match before August.
Freshmen power
The freshmen-heavy Jay County High School girls cross country team fell just one point short of the runner-up spot at the 2024 Celina Rotary Cross Country Invitational at Wright State University – Lake Campus on Saturday, while the boys had a runner finish just outside the top 10.
Bruins blanked
HARTFORD CITY — The Bruins’ formation can be difficult to defend. With four options out of the backfield to run the ball, if the defense doesn’t pick up who has the pigskin, it could spell trouble. The Patriots defenders didn’t have that problem in the opener.
Keeping possession
Nin Way had Jay County’s number last season. Her four goals led Heritage to a pair of one-goal victories. With an early score Thursday, it seemed Heritage might be fine without their first-team All-Allen County Athletic Conference forward, who is now at Indiana Tech.
Tribe girls end as county runners-up
The Fort Recovery High School girls cross country team finished 16 points shy of first place at the Mercer County Invitational held at Marion County Township on Tuesday.

Jay County High School’s boys soccer team pulled off a 1-0 victory in the season opener against Muncie Central on Tuesday in the first official game played on the new turf at Harold E. Schutz Memorial Stadium.

Freshmen lead Patriots in season opener
The Jay County High School cross country teams competed at the 2024 Tigers XC Invite on Saturday morning to open the season with a third-place finish for the girls and a seventh-place finish for the boys.
Indians take top spot at Mercer County Invite
The village earned bragging rights in Mercer County on Tuesday after the Fort Recovery High School boys golf team claimed the top spot in the Mercer County Invitational with a score of 327 at Mercer County Elks Golf Club.
Patriots place eighth
GENEVA — The 2024-25 high school season is officially underway. It wasn’t the smoothest sailing for the Patriots out of the gate, but coach Carissa Allred is pleased with the progress she has seen and will be looking for more as the season continues.
