TIF district plan approved

Jay County Plan Commission approved the economic development plan Thursday for the county’s tax increment financing (TIF) district.

Pitch made for new software

County officials are looking into software changes for a few county offices. Jay County Council heard Wednesday from Jay County auditor Emily Franks and Jay County Treasurer’s Office first deputy Jonelle Foreman about a need to update financial and property tax software.

New leases are approved

Updated lease agreements have been approved for the organizations that rent space from the city at Community Resource Center. Portland Board of Works approved the agreements during its meeting Wednesday.

Board finds no harassment

An investigation has found no wrongdoing following a complaint of harassment by Portland’s police chief and other officers against the city’s clerk-treasurer.

Ambassador on campus

McKenna Vore was recently approved to represent Jay County through the Ball State University County Ambassador Program.

Prep work should start soon

Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition hopes to close on the house it plans to develop into a recovery home in Portland and begin prep work as soon as possible. Commissioners heard updates about the organization’s project Monday.

Mural underway

DUNKIRK — Another mural is in process in the city. All those who attended Monday’s Dunkirk City Council meeting walked into the city building while artist Pam Bliss painted above their heads.

Blankley is back to lead facility

A familiar face is returning to Jay County Country Living’s leadership. Jay County Commissioners approved a recommendation from the facility’s advisory board of directors to bring back Melissa Blankley as director on an as-needed basis during their meeting Monday, effective immediately.

Jay County Country Living Advisory Board of Directors met with Jay County Commissioners on Tuesday to discuss expectations moving forward as well as for changes to policies.

JCDC to ask for $ to restore staffing

The JCDC board of directors voted unanimously Tuesday to request $261,975 from the county for 2025, which would allow the organization to hire a new employee to restore the Jay County Community Development position that has been vacant for nearly two years.

Ron May asks for marijuana discussion

A discussion about marijuana legalization will be on the agenda for the next city council meeting. Portland City Council member Ron May during a brief meeting Monday asked that the topic be placed on the agenda for the next meeting, which is June 16.
