Money focused

Signing Day events scheduled
Jay County Junior-Senior High School’s career fair is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3. Interview day will follow from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, with signing day by appointment.
Moving toward moratorium
The county is moving on moratoriums. Jay County Plan Commission OK’d moving forward with enacting two 12-month moratoriums Thursday on commercial battery storage facilities and new solar farm developments in the county.

Additional funding approved
Jay County Council on a split 3-2 vote agreed to pay an additional $39,600 for public safety firm Ritter Strategic Services to look into costs and other information regarding joining the Integrated Public Safety Commission’s system or purchasing a stand-alone system.

Indiana State Board of Animal Health reported a new cases of highly pathogenic avian flu in the county at a commercial breeder duck operation.

Jay County Commissioners approved an amendment Monday to the county’s truck restriction ordinance.
JEMS director terminated
One of Jay Emergency Medical Service’s directors has been fired after he was arrested on multiple felony charges Thursday. Jay County Commissioners voted unanimously to fire John R. McFarland, 48, Portland, during a special session Monday afternoon.
County to allow virtual attendance
Jay County Commissioners approved a resolution Monday laying out stipulations for commissioners to attend meetings virtually. (Jay County Council will likely look into the same resolution for its members during its meeting Wednesday.)
JEMS director arrested on drug, theft charges
One of Jay Emergency Medical Service’s directors was arrested Thursday for multiple felonies relating to theft and drugs.
Property sale approved
Portland Board of Works approved the lone bid of $11,000 from LeeAnn Miller of Reclaiming Design to purchase the properties at 208 and 210 N. Meridian St.
Jay hardest-hit
Jay County has been the hardest-hit state in Indiana by highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, with the most recent confirmed positive location this week.
